Associate Professor in Reading and Elementary Education at UNC Charlotte
Erin K. Washburn, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Reading and Elementary Education and the Co-Director of Teacher Development and the Mebane Scholars Program at the Mebane Early Literacy Center in the College of Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. At UNC Charlotte, Dr. Washburn teaches courses in literacy assessment and intervention and directs enhanced clinical experiences in the UNC Charlotte Reads Program. Dr. Washburn’s research is rooted in the belief that access to high-quality literacy instruction is a human right. In collaboration with educators and schools, she has conducted research on teacher knowledge of literacy related constructs and dyslexia, the efficacy of school-based and out-of-school interventions, and the use of data-based decision making for literacy instruction. Her work has been published in high-ranking research and practitioner journals in the fields of literacy and special education. Dr. Washburn is a founding board member of Center for Effective Literacy Instruction (CERI) and serves as the Associate Editor of the research journal Learning Disabilities: A Contemporary Journal. She also provides professional learning in literacy assessment, instruction, and data-based decision making for educators and instructional leaders, and serves as a consultant and literacy expert on a variety of local, state, and national literacy organizations and projects related to literacy teacher preparation and professional development. And most importantly, she has been married to Derek for 23 years and together they coordinate the extracurricular lives of their two teenage children, William (17) and Davis (14), and snuggle with their fur babies, Rubie May and Charlotte Rose.
